January 23

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for helping to raise money for the school through the fundraiser. Because our class raised the most money, we participated in the pig race against Mrs. Nicholson's class. We won! Soon we will be having a pizza party sponcered by Granite State Fundraiser.

The children are learning so much about the Civil Rights Movement. We are reading and discussing the times in Social Studies and Reading. Some children are even doing research on their own. I love to see them taking on their own projects.

Thanks to the work of Mrs. Bennett, we have math games to check out on a weekly basis. The children will be responsible for getting the games and the pieces needed for the game, back and forth to school. If they want to play with you, please encourage them. Extra practice gives them a deeper understanding.

Soon we will be having a Valentine's Day party. Mrs. K will be contacting you. We will need just a few people to bake.

Dear Parents,

We had some exciting news this week. Thanks to you and the children, our class was the top seller in the fundraiser. We exceeded $1,600. Now the children can participate in a "pig race" and if we win that, there will be a pizza party. Of course, the children are very excited. They really want to have some pizza.

Thank you for making sure that your child did the celery experiment at home. I told them that they could experiment with the materials needed, and they sure did. They were very willing to share their results. I'm sure they learned a lot.

We are ready for our chapter 5 test in Math. Also, I will be doing a timed test of their math facts soon. I hope to see a lot of progress.

We have been exploring historical fiction and non-fiction writing. I was able to share with them my grandfather's diary from 1905. They are very interested, although it isn't quite as exciting as the fictional diary of a girl in the 1800's. As soon as I started reading these things to them, they became fascinated with diaries. I will read some "Choose Your Own Adventure" books next. They are also historical fiction and we will do some independent research on the dust bowl, the civil war, etc.

From now on, I will be expecting the children to write their spelling words in cursive. Please have your child practice writing them at home in cursive.

Remember that there is no school on Tuesday, because of the primary.

Have a great week.
